Caramel reviews Game of Pets Book 1: The Boy Who Knew Too Much by Aaron Blabey

Caramel enjoyed Aaron Blabey’s The Bad Guys series and has reviewed the first three books in it: The Bad Guys, The Bad Guys in Mission Unpluckable, and The Bad Guys in the Furball Strikes Back. Today he is reviewing the first book of a new series by Blabey: Game of Pets: The Boy Who Knew Too Much, which was published just last week! As usual, Sprinkles is taking notes and asking questions.

Sprinkles: So Caramel, today we are talking about a brand new book from an author you have really enjoyed before.

Caramel: Yep, we are, Aaron Blabey is the person who created The Bad Guys books. And I really enjoyed those.

S: This is a different kind of book though. Those are almost like graphic novels, more or less, right? This one is more like a regular chapter book.

C: Yes, this seems to have more words, but not that much more.

S: Hmm, apparently there have been a total of twenty Bad Guys books; we only reviewed three of them. But now this one is the first book of a totally new series. Can you tell us a bit about it?

C: Yeah, sure. The book starts out like a game show, with an announcer saying it is called the Game of Pets, where a bunch of competitors are in control of millions of animals on earth, such as cats, dogs and other ‘pets’. By controlling the pets the competitors’ goal is to make their humans destroy their homes and as much of the planet Earth as possible.

S: Okay, that sounds weird. But please go on.

C: Yeah. So then it cuts to a child, a boy named Griff, who is allergic to everything,  except fish and scaled creatures, but he’s scared of those.

S: Okay, I am guessing he will get a pet nonetheless.

C: Yes, he does! He finds an axolotl named Bob in the back of a pet store, and he for some reason really likes it.

S: You really like axolotls too, no?

C: Yeah, I even reviewed a little book named Max, A Little Axolot.

S: So you can sympathize with Griff.

C: A bit, yes. Anyways, it turns out that this axolotl isn’t a part of the Game of Pets, and he wants to save the world, and so he chose Griff to save the Earth with him.

S: Hmm, from what you told me, Griff does not seem like a great savior, but we read a lot of other books with unlikely heroes.

C: Yeah, definitely. Ben Ripley in the Spy School series, for example, is kind of like that. He is not athletic at all, and kind of clumsy. But he is extremely intelligent. Griff is also like this. And now that I think of it, Artemis Fowl is also kind of like that. So yes, a lot of heroes who are kind of weak but figure out things and solve problems and save the world and such. Hmm.

S: I think authors of books using this kind of hero try to give kids hope that even if you are not the strongest or the fastest kid, you can still make a difference. But of course the moral of the story is not the point. The point is the books are also a lot of fun. At least Artemis Fowl and Spy School books were very much so. Did you like this book too?

C: This is just the first book, so I am not sure yet if I will like it as much as those other series. But it is also pretty good. Definitely very funny and weird.

S: So when you told me about a game show which uses pets and humans on our planet, I thought of the other book series you are reading and reviewing for the book bunnies blog. The Dungeon Crawler Carl series also has a galactic game show, and outsiders are just watching poor humans struggle for their own pleasure.

C: Yeah, I can see the parallel. But of course the Carl books have a lot more pages, and they have only a couple pictures in them. The Game of Pets book is a lot more visual. Lots of pictures on each page.

S: Which makes them more appropriate for and appealing to younger bunnies of course.

C: Of course. The Carl books are not so appropriate for very young bunnies. This book, on the other hand, is written for us kiddos. I guess if you are a young bunny who might be scared of the idea of aliens trying to use pets to destroy the planet, maybe it is not a good book for you. But otherwise it is a funny book and fun to read.

S: I saw the very last page says “To be continued…” Does that mean it ends in a cliffhanger?

C: Kind of. The main events of the book are kind of explained and resolved but the epilogue introduces a new problem. And it involves an axolotl!

S: Hmm, so you just might have to read the next book.

C: Yep, I just might.

S: We will see, Caramel. For now, I think this is a good place to wrap up this review.

C: Sure.

S: What do you want to tell our readers?

C: Stay tuned for more book bunny reviews!

Caramel enjoyed reading Game of Pets Book 1: The Boy Who Knew Too Much by Aaron Blabey and is eager to read the second book in the series.

Caramel reviews The Bad Guys in The Furball Strikes Back by Aaron Blabey (Bad Guys #3)

A few weeks ago, Caramel reviewed the first book in Aaron Blabey’s Bad Guys series. Then soon after that, he reviewed the second book in the series: The Bad Guys in Mission Unpluckable. Today he reviews the third book: The Bad Guys in The Furball Strikes Back. As usual Sprinkles is taking notes and asking followup questions.

Sprinkles: So we just finished reading the book together. But you had read and reread the book several times before already. Why don’t you tell our readers a bit about this book Caramel?

Caramel: Sure. Do you remember what happened at the end of the second book?

S: Yes, but maybe you can remind our readers.

C: Ok. In the very end of the second book, we meet a guinea pig named Marmalade, and he is really angry at our bad guys for saving the chickens.

S: So let’s track back a bit. Who are our bad guys?

C: A shark, a wolf, a snake, a piranha, and a tarantula, who joined the team in the second book.

S: So these are animals that people are usually afraid of, and they usually are villains in stories. And in this series of books, they want to become good, and do good deeds. Right?

C: Actually, only the wolf wants to do that, at least in the first book. But then the others like the idea too, after they save the puppies there. And in the second book they save ten thousand chickens.

S: And this Marmalade is angry at them for saving the chickens?

C: Yes.

S: Why?

C: Because the chicken farm was apparently his. And he is evil. He is a billionaire mad scientist, and is tired of people thinking he is cute and cuddly.

S: So he doesn’t want to be cute and cuddly anymore?

C: No. I don’t know why.

S: Well, that is kind of funny actually, right? The bad guys don’t want to be bad anymore and the cute cuddly animal doesn’t want to be cute and cuddly.

C: Yes.

S: So what happens in this book? in the last one there was also a mysterious ninja. Does that ninja show up in this third book?

C: Well, actually the ninja did not really show up in the second book, only on the last page, they tell us there will be a mysterious ninja. And in this book she shows up.

S: She? The ninja is female? That’s cool!

C: Yes, she is awesome!

S: So what really happens in this book?

C: We learn that Marmalade (“that’s Dr. Rupert Marmalade to you!”) has plans to take over the world. He has a “secret weapon”.

S: And do we learn what this secret weapon is in this book?

C: Yes and no. We see them in this book but we learn how dangerous they are in the next book. Marmalade is trying to turn every single cute and cuddly animal into zombies!

S: Wow! That is not so nice, is it?

C: Nope. Marmalade is evil! All he cares about is having power.

S: So this book also ends in a cliffhanger then?

C: Sort of. So I will end my review with my usual words: Stay tuned for more book bunnies adventures!

Caramel really enjoyed reading The Bad Guys in The Furball Strikes Back by Aaron Blabey (Bad Guys #3) and is looking forward to reading more about their adventures.

Sprinkles: So Caramel, how do you want to start this review today?

Caramel: If you like funny books, and if you like books with evil guinea pigs who are mad scientist billionaires, this might be the book for you!

S: Wow, Caramel, let us not give away so much all at once! Yes, this is a funny book. It follows the adventures of the same four “bad guys” from the first book, right?

C: Yep. There is one more new character though. Actually there are two new characters.

S: Tell me about the one who joins the team.

C: He is a tarantula named Legs. People think he is evil.

S: Just like the other four friends, right?

C: Yep, pretty much.

S: So then there is a wolf, a piranha, a snake, and a shark. and now a spider, and they all want to convince people that they are actually good.

C: Yes. They try to save the world.

S: Wait, that is not yet in this book!

C: Sorry, yes, in this book they try to save chickens. And they succeed.

S: What do you mean by “save chickens”?

C: They save them from an evil chicken farm. A very high-tech place. And that is why they need Legs.

S: So that sums up the story line. Let us talk a bit more about the book in general. So do you think this one is as funny as the first book?

C: Yes, it is even funnier in fact. I love these guys! They are so funny! In the next book …

S: We’re not going there yet Caramel! We can talk about the third book next time if you want. But for now, let us focus on this one…

C: Awww. That’s hard! And very unfortunate. I want to talk about all the books at the same time!

S: Well, this is your review of the second book. Can you tell us a bit more about why you like this book?

C: The book ends with something like a cliffhanger. There is a mysterious ninja, and a very evil guinea pig, and you want to know what will happen next.

S: You already read the next book, right?

C: Yes. Did you read the next book Sprinkles?

S: No, not yet. But I am curious.

C: The next book is awesome too! It’s even better than this one.

S: Ok, then, I guess I just have to read it, right?

C: Yes. And we just might need to review it too!

S: That sounds great!

C: Can I rate this book, like Marshmallow does all the time?

S: Sure.

C: Yay! I rate this book 99%!

S: Hmm, why is it not 100%?

C: Because the next book is even better!

S: I see! Ok, let us wrap things up.

C: Yes. Stay tuned for more book bunnies adventures!

Caramel reviews Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey

Caramel has recently been obsessed with the Bad Guys series of Aaron Blabey, and wanted his first review of the year to be a review of the first book: Bad Guys. As always Sprinkles is taking notes and asking followup questions.

Sprinkles: Caramel, I’ve seen you really enjoying reading these Bad Guys books lately. Can you tell us a bit what they are about?

Caramel: They are about bad guys, bad animals who want to be good. Actually, only the wolf wants to be good, but the rest are not that interested.

S: So let me see. There is a wolf, and he is always the bad guy in fairy tales and such, and he wants to change his image. And the other animals… who are the other bad guys?

C: There is a shark, there is a piranha, and some people think he is a sardine, even a vampire sardine!

S: Well, the piranha does have sharp teeth!

C: Yeah! And it doesn’t really look like a sardine. Anyways, there is also a snake.

S: Hm, so these four are often seen as villains in stories. and they want to change that, right?

C: Yep. Well, not all of them, only the wolf wants to in the beginning, but then all of them kind of like the idea. Here is a video which explains the story:

Here is a video summary of Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey.

S: I agree that this is an interesting premise for a book. The bad guys want to be good, but the world is not yet quite ready for them.

C: Yes. So they try to save a cat stuck on a tree. They try to tell the cat to jump down and they will catch it. But the cat is scared of them. And so when the wolf tries to catch the cat, the cat scratches him real badly.

S: That is kind of sad though, no? They are trying to do something good but nobody expects good things from them. Everyone is afraid of them. Isn’t that sad?

C: Yes.

S: It is difficult to change people’s opinions once they make their minds up about us. So that could be one message of the book. What could be another?

C: I don’t know.

S: Hmm. I was thinking that there is also a more optimistic message. That even if people think you are a bad guy, you could always try to be good.

C: Yes, I agree. You can always try to be good.

S: But I think these messages are not quite the main reason why you enjoyed this book. Tell me what you liked most.

C: It’s extremely funny! The pictures are funny, and the bad guys get into funny situations.

S: So would you recommend this book to other young bunnies like yourself?

C: Yep! And I want to read all the other books in this series!

S: I see a few more reviews of bad guys in our future…

C: YES! But for now, stay tuned for more book bunny adventures!
